![]() The truth is not, I don’t think, in either of the pieces, though I do feel for Bosie when he says he has been made the villain of this story because it’s true. If I have Interested you in this story, go watch Wilde (1996) with Jude Law and Stephen Fry. Bosie feels angry at De Profundis, he feels angry that he will be remembered mostly because of his relationship with Oscar Wilde, which is, to this day, still true. A love that was corrupted by society and then by their friends, their enemies, and everyone else in between. Wilde made no effort to hide it, probably because, as I said before, his letter was meant for Bosie only, but even Bosie in his attempt to downplay the whole thing as a “vice”, he can’t help but add that devotion he felt between his lines. In both De Profundis and Bosie’s work, we see a lot of pain and contempt with one another, but most of all one can read the lines the love they had for each other. ![]() I see this as an inexcusable and distasteful flaw in society. It nevertheless managed to bring tears to my eyes, because of many reasons which I will state.īosie feels the need to excuse his relationship with men, especially his relationship with Oscar Wilde because he lived in an era where said relationships meant prison time and public shame. Bosie’s work was obviously meant to be read, which makes it more bearable. As it was written for one pair of eyes only, one feels wicked while reading, like one is entering an intimate realm in which we were not meant to be part of. Many things may have been said about that letter, but no one can deny it is a confession of pure and utter love. De Profundis, Oscar Wilde’s letter to Bosie while he was in prison, is a beautiful work of art, a piece that conveys suffering and redemption, and quite simply, the purest form of love from the one who wrote it. it is only natural, therefore, that one story can take different turns and styles depending on its author. The “ truth” is nothing more than a word, subjective, and to each person, there is one truth. it becomes even harder when said truth is tainted by countless sets of ideas, words, and prejudices. Now, it is very hard to know the absolute truth. ![]() My Friendship With Oscar Wilde was written after many years and upon reflection, and we get the truest and rawest version of the events as Bosie remembers him. If you aren’t familiar with this tragic love story I won’t bore you with the details, but I advise you to look it up. As a matter of fact, he despised Wilde so much, he wrote a book that he later confessed to being filled with lies due to the hatred he felt towards him. Ten years after Wilde’s death, and blaming him for his own downfall, Bosie started to despise him. Their love story was turbulent, and it was the major cause of Wilde’s imprisonment and some of the most beautiful phrase ever written. He was a poet and a journalist, but he is famously known as the man who ruined Oscar Wilde. If you know about Lord Alfred Douglas or Bosie, chances are you hate him. ![]()
